What’s In a Name?
I get asked this periodically: What’s with the words “realty,” “realtor,” “real estate,” “broker,” “brokerage,” and “agent?”
What’s the difference?
All of these terms refer to people who assist with buying and selling property: houses, commercial buildings, farms, and raw land. Officially, a REALTOR™ is someone who is a dues-paying member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and is bound to their Code of Ethics. NAR also advocates and lobbies for consumer rights nationwide, so our dues work hard for us as professionals and you as a consumer.
Regardless of whether you call them a Realtor, agent, or broker — find a licensed professional who meets your needs. Ask them about their negotiating skills, track record, communication style, and above all, work with someone you like and trust.
