Wine Clubs
Wine is definitely on the list of things people appreciate about life in the Walla Walla Valley. With over 120 wineries and a surprising number of grape varietals, there can be a lot to learn and experience. Sooner or later you’ll find yourself wondering about the merits of wine clubs.
One of the things to keep in mind is that wine clubs aren’t like the CD club subscription you had in the ‘90s where you had to keep buying and could never escape. In a typical wine club membership, there are either twice yearly or possibly quarterly shipments, and you can stop your subscription by simply letting the winery know you’ve had enough. Memberships can be as little as four bottles per shipment and you typically have the option of reds, whites, a mix, or possibly tiered membership where you select the number of bottles.
With so many wineries, how does one select where to be a member? In interviewing a few wine club managers, there’s a consistent pattern:
Join wineries where you like the wine! This might seem obvious, but as you are likely signing up for the equivalent of a case per year, it really should be a winery where you like their product.
Events and other member benefits. While the wine is wonderful, many wineries have regular members-only events like dinners, tastings, and concerts. These benefits often make the membership worthwhile even if you are just a casual wine drinker.
Look for value. Generally one of the perks is members-only pricing. These discounts are often even higher at those member-only events so as to encourage you to buy a bottle (or a case) to make the most of your membership.
Members-only bottles. It’s not uncommon for wineries to have special blends or releases that they hold back only for members.
Look for wineries where you like the facilities. Wineries are happy to have you come enjoy their views and and seating, as they know that you are likely to have a glass or buy a few bottles while you are there. It can be a great way to pass the afternoon.
Finally, wine club memberships aren’t just for wine lovers. A membership can be a great way to pick up a few special bottles for friends or business associates, or to ensure you always have a good bottle on hand for wine-drinking guests.
